Turning Disability Into Ability

MEDICAID WAIVER RESPITE/COMMUNITY RECREATION
Recreation programs provide activities in the community for both adults and teens with developmental disabilities. The programs are designed to educate individuals of various recreational opportunities that exist in the community while at the same time helping them to meet new people, develop friendships, and have fun! Each program fosters the development of social skills, helps to promote independence, and provides opportunities for community inclusion.

Adult Recreation
The Medicaid Waiver Respite program is designed to provide short term respite for family members of individuals with developmental disabilities. The individual must be 18 years of age or older and live in a non-certified residence (such as with a family member) in Onondaga County. Activities are scheduled daily with transportation provided for most activities.

Teen Recreation
The Teen Scene recreation program provides activities in the community for teens ages 13 – 18. Teens who have a developmental disability and are living in a non-certified residence (such as with a family member) in Onondaga County may qualify. Activities are scheduled Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and during school breaks. Transportation is provided to all activities.

League Bowling
Bowling leagues are open to anyone 18 years and older with a developmental disability.  The league runs for 16 weeks from October to March and concludes at the end of the season with an official banquet. Bowlers must provide their own transportation and staff or parent supervision.

Art Surge                                   Art Surge is an art program for teens ages 13-18 who have been diagnosed with  autism or an autism spectrum disorder.  Utilizing visual arts as an outlet, Art Surge supports the social, creative, and sensory needs of the individuals it serves by allowing
particpants an opportunity to understand the creative process from conception to completion – promoting communication, self-expression, trust and socialization skills.

Programs may include but are not limited to:
photography, painting/water colors, drawing, fabric design, sculpture, food design, Latin dance

Each class runs once a week for five weeks and is instructed by an expert in the field.
