Summary

Skill Instructors are responsible for providing support, guidance and assistance to consumers in the residential program. Responsibilities include teaching consumers life skills for establishing and maintaining their home. Coordinates and assists consumers in cooking, cleaning and planning home and residential activities. They also plan and coordinate recreational activities for consumers and are responsible for teaching, monitoring and implementing safety procedures for consumers. The Skill Instructor reports directly to the Residence Coordinator and Program Coordinator as necessary.

 Requirements

1.       Teaches consumers life skills related to establishing and maintaining their home.

2.       Assists consumers with household shopping, preparing meals and to accomplish household cleaning.

3.       Plans, coordinates and participates in consumers’ external social and community activities promoting inclusion and independence.

4.       Provides automobile or van transportation for consumers and/or accompany consumers on trips using public transportation.

5.       Monitors and ensures that activities, both inside and outside of the home, emphasize consumer safety and accident prevention.

6.       Must accompany consumers on medical appointments.

7.       Must interact positively with families, service coordinators and other outside providers. This includes representing the Agency in a positive manner.

8.       Establishes and assists consumers in maintaining acceptable hygiene standards. Provide direct support and assistance as needed.

9.       Supports the Goals and Mission of Arc of Onondaga County. Ensures that your communications and personal performance reflect the Agency’s commitment teamwork, compliance with policies and procedures and respect for consumers and staff.

10.   Attends and participates in required Arc meetings, staff development and training programs.

11.   Must have some degree of flexibility to work at different hours of the day or alternate locations in order to provide 24 hour /7 day a week coverage in the residences.

12.   Have the philosophy that their role is to teach, not parent. Assists the consumers in being as productive and independent as possible, allowing the consumers to be individuals and included in the social network of their choice.

13.   Establishes and maintains controls for consumer health needs including administering authorized and required medications. 

14.   Must obtain Medication Administration Certification within the first 90 days of employment. Must pass recertifications and maintain Medication Administration Certification. Failure to do so, without a signed exemption, will result in termination or transfer to a position that does not require Medication Administration Certification.

15.   Provides other job-related support and services as required or assigned by supervisor.

 

 Education & Experience Requirements

·         High School Diploma or GED

·         Six months related experience preferred.

·         Combination of education and experience which, in the judgement of the employer, equals above standards.

·         A valid NYS driver’s license and a driving record acceptable to the Agency’s insurance carrier.

·         Must be able to read and write proficiently.
